On this website , made by Bill Elsinger , you can find a whole bunch of images/photos that explain the different terms used in ultimate.
Call it something like a picture-dictionnary , sure thing is it's really interesting for players who haven't been around this game too long yet and even to others.
I think it's a great idea to explain what for example 'a huck' is with a picture..and the best thing is you get an explanation if you click each picture as well. Super !

A little example :
What is a foul on the thrower?

"When the thrower releases the disc, they have the right to throw without having any part of their body receiving contact from the defender (prior to the release of the disc)......."

"Why do people love ultimate? Ah yes. Why do they indeed. For me, much of it has to do with the simple beauty of the movement of the disc, the curves inscribed into the air and the clarity of motion coupled with the joy of ultimate effort unimpeded (mostly) by the clutter of other people's physicality (no contact, indeed). The movements of ultimate are beautiful, whether they be cuts, throw fakes, layouts, skies or pulls."

A lot of teams have been training throughout the year for these two championships , BUIC and BUOC (Belgian Ultimate Indoor/Outdoor Championships).

Only 10 more days till playoffs and 23 days until the 1st weekend of BUOC...

Tourney Report - Devils Heaven 2009

While Objectif Moon was being played in Brussels , a whole bunch of belgians were defending the belgian tricolore honours in Enschede , NL.
Devils' Heaven 2009 was a succes for Freezzzbeezzz,Kallikantzaros and Huyltimate ending respectively 5th , 6th and 7th.
Kallika-what the hell ?
Well , this is an occasional team put together to go to Paganello 2009.
The idea (and the interim name for the team as well) came from Sigi (Diabolic Heaven) and he gathered a nice team to go to he biggest beach ultimate tourney in the world in Rimini , Italy.. Our name will be Morning Glory , but the past weekend we were called Kallikantzaros..
You should ask Sigi what it means ; something of a Greek legend of midgets...
Anyway , we had a nice time in Holland.
Some very nice games and a good atmosphere.
Nice to see three belgian teams ending all in a row and even more importantly : the Beezzz (without any anciens - okay some of them have been playing for many years now , but they're still young!) were awarded with the prestigious Spirit of the Game award.
Another good example of the belgian spirit ! Nice !!

Tourney Report - Objectif Moon 2009

A lot of ultimate action in and around Belgium the past weekend..
In Brussels there was the Objectif Moon tournament won by Mooncatchers themselves.. They seem to have had an exciting final against the Frisbee Fighters : an occasional team with a few Moons (Pierre, Arnaud, Quentin) et 3 juniors français.
Here's what Christophe had to say about it :

Last sunday , 15/02/09 was the 4th official indoor day.
In division 3 (if I'm not mistaken) a camera crew was present to shoot some images.

Okay , I've been working and changing things for a few hours now and it feels good.
But I do need your feedback so please throw the disc back at me.
Use the comment section (below every post) to tell me what you do or don't like about the new layout.
I can really use your opinion.
And not only on the design of this blog.

Change is a necessary part of life.
It's what brought you to this game.
It's what's made this game to what it is today.
It's what made new teams rise in the last few years.
Think of the birth of Slijpschijven by two brothers who wanted the world on a disc ; now they play on the highest level in Belgium.
Think of 8 Freezzzbeezzz players moving to Ghent and starting Gentle , a team that has been BUOC and BUIC champion twice and thus forced younger players in Bruges to step their game up (which they did)...
Think of other teams like Diabolic Heaven,Schijnwerpers,Freespect,Fucking Hellfish ;
each and every one of those teams was founded with a will to go forward , to create.
Teams like Jetset,XLR8RS,Freezzzbeezzz,Mooncatchers , who have all been around for while saw other teams fade and new opponents rise...
And I didn't even mention Huyltimate,Skywalkers or the newly added Disco Duro in Ghent.. Teams I don't know too much about , but as you can already guess :
you'll be reading more about this right here.
Change is what we need.
Keep going forward and take the good things along.

Let's Go to the Playoffs !!!

Okay , day 4 has passed ; 4 remaining tickets for playoffs have been divided.

As you can see in the picture , there are 5 lucky teams who will battle for the title of indoor champion of Belgium for 2009.

Gentle , Huyltimate , Slijpschijven , Diabolic Heaven , Mooncatchers (in random order?).

Expect more information from the organisers any day soon.

Huyltimate won three games today , so did Gentle , but in the end Huyltimate was able to beat Gentle -unbeaten this season up until this game. Winners of day 4 !

This might actually turn out to be a good thing for us ,(anyone heard this before ? : "courage comes before the fall") although it would have been nice to be unbeaten before playoffs.

Anyhow , after having made a huge comeback against Slijpschijven (from 7-3 tot 7-8) the Gentley's know that five strong teams will be playing the playoffs.

Diabolic didn't have a fantastic last day , but still have a ticket for the playoffs and to me they are the revelation of the season ! Congrats for already getting this far !

Slijpschijven had a little trouble waking up in the morning but finally played well...

Huy put on some big pressure and won three games and only lost to the fifth team of today : Freezzzbeezzz...

These beezzz were quite disappointed when they saw Gentle losing the game against Huy => This would have been their last option to get into the playoffs...

We did try..

So , the time has come , playoff selections are known and I truly wonder who will make it as champions.

Will Gentle stand tall , and fulfill the line of the last 3 play-days ? Or is Huy gonna prove that they can play without their 'anciens' ? Maybe Slijpschijven will step their game up and take home the cup ? Or maybe Diabolic Heaven will stunt..who knows? Or is Moon gonna have a comeback and take the victory ?

A lot of questions ; few answers..

Come and check it out yourself on in just a few weeks.

I can assure you it will be worth coming to Brussels for.

Media - Blooper of the Year !

Check out the new Slijpwijven players !!
As you can see in the picture above , there was a huge mix-up somewhere in the last few days.
A reporter from a local newspaper in Aalter came to write an interview about the new Women's Ultimate Indoor Champions team Slijpwijven and chose the wrong picture...
Elke (Slijpwijven) sent him the pictures from my blog and somehow he managed to publish a picture of the vice-champions Gentleteefjes...
Too bad for the Aalter women , but hey , some might find this very funny... (at least if you're not one of the Slijpwijven themselves..)
Maybe you should get this reporter to apologise in the next edition of the paper , with a new picture of the one and only Slijpwijven , who deserved their title very much !

Tourney Report - Belgian Junior Day

A little report on the Belgian Junior Ultimate Indoor Championship , yesterday at Uccle,Bruxelles ; written by Ollivier (Mooncatchers) :

More than 70 juniors were present yesterday at the BJUIC (Belgian Junior Ultimate Indoor Cup) 2009 !

It was a great success to see the future generations of ultimate players in action, both women and men, and a great spirit in and off the field.

Let’s go Belgium , the future is in your hands !

9 teams in 2 divisions.

The results are:

Divison 2 (under 17 years)

Spirit of the game : Trancheuzen 2

1. Mooncatchers 2
2. Diabolic’s Heaven 2
3. Trancheuzen 2
4. Mooncatchers 3

Final = 6/5 for Mooncatchers 2, after a last point where both teams had the disc 2 times to win the title ! What a suspense !

It was amazing to see those 30 young boys and girls between 11 and 16 years running, throwing, catching and playing all day with a smile of happiness !

Division 1 (under 20 years)

Spirit of the game : Freespect

1. Wannabeezzz
2. Mooncatchers 1
3. Freespect
4. Diabolic’s Heaven 1
5. Trancheuzen 1

Less suspense in the under 20 division, Wannabeezzz won more easily the title for the 2^nd year in a row, congratulations !

Mooncatchers 1 starts well with a 3/1 for them and an opportunity to score 4/1. They missed it and Wannabeezzz came back with more confidence, and they finally won 12/6 (? Not sure…).

I want to explain that 3 teams were equal for the 2^nd place and so, the place in final, and the goal-average between those 3 games and 3 teams, was Mooncatchers +4, Freespect and Diabolic’s -2, Freespect beat Diabolic’s, so Freespect finished 3^rd and diabolic’s 4^th .

The battle for the place in final against Wannabeezzz was hard: Diabolic’s beat Moon 1 by 1 point in the morning game. Moon 1 beat Freespect by 5 and Freespect beat Diabolic’s by 3 points.

Trancheuzen 1 fight all day and had some close games, they keep a great spirit attitude in their team and they learned and played better and better.

Wannabeezzz rock France !!

Since upcoming sunday is gonna be the official Belgian Junior Day , now is the time to write a little something about the youngsters.
Although in ultimate there are a lot of people who started playing only somewhere in their early twenties , there are also a big bunch of players who started learning the game early in their lifetime.
In our sport , or maybe in Belgium in particular , the boys and girls who start playing around the age of 12 (or even below?) are mostly exceptions.
Fact is that this has only been changing since the last few years.
One of those teams to make a name for itself are the Wannabeezzz , the junior team from Freezzzbeezzz (Brugge).
Besides having a cool name ( and other related teams with names like Boobeezzz and Hazzzbeezzz and -remember back in our days- the African Killer Beezzz....) they also have a few players with a few years of experience.
But what they mostly have is enthousiasm ; and as my header (the intro text on my blog) says : 'Enthousiasm is encouraged !'
These youngsters have been playing multiple indoor tournaments in Belgium and beyond , and on the previous indoor day (BUIC day 3) they even tasted a little something of playing in first division !!
Although they went down to second division again , they didn't let it get to their hearts and decided to try their luck in TSUNAMIXTE : a nice indoor tournament at Nemours , France.

They amazed a lot of teams and players and came back with a 5th position.
Don't start thinking "they only ended 5th"!!! There were 24 coed teams at this tournament and the Wannabeezzz defeated teams like Monkey Foo , Hot and Ah Ouh Puc before ending 5th ! This is an amazing accomplishment at -as some might say- the unofficial French indoor championship !!
The top three was all pick-up teams with many experienced players and unfortunately , after not being able to keep a two point lead to Friselis , the Wannabeezzz just didn't make top 3..
Congratulations to them !! Nice to see the future being guaranteed.
And that's why we need coaches and experienced players like Guido (Freezzzbeezzz 'Erevuurzittere') passing on the torch.
Keep the fire burning !!



And talking of Juniors , yes Juniors with a capital J (they deserve it ) , I wonder how they're gonna perform at the European Youth Ultimate Championships (EYUC09) in Vienna in the beginning of August 2009. Belgium will be sending out it's sons and daughters !
I hope I will be able to post another blog item with the title 'Belgian Juniors Rock EYUC' !

Happy Birthday to Get Horizontal !!

Well , I survived a first year !
Actually , the very first time I had the idea to start a blog about Belgian Ultimate was somewhere around october , november 2007.

Then I started working on it and mostly thinking about how I wanted to approach things.

On the 30th of November 2007 I posted the very first image and called it 'Testbeeld'.

But , the official birth of this blog was on the 1st of February 2008 , when I made the news public.

Today exactly one year ago.

I've had a lot of fun writing about all that has been happening in our small ultimate community. Rest assure , I still have a lot of things in my mind and I am most definitely gonna keep on posting right here.

I'm also working on a big surprise of which you'll be seeing the result around the time of Tom's Tourney and BUOC.

I have a few loyal fans and a lot of once-in-a-while casual readers who have been giving me great feedback.

If you have any more suggestions or ideas feel free to let me know.

A year has passed and although I want to invite you to check out the archive (This is my 108th message I've posted) I'd say : Never look back !

The future belongs to those who dare to dream.

And that's what I'm doing right here.

I believe in our Spirit and the basic joy of play.

And this is my contribution to our community.

The basic idea was that it would be nice to be able to read something that was a little closer to home. Something you could relate to. Something you are part of. And that's what this is.

I enjoy thinking and writing about our game as much as I enjoy playing .

(Well , if I had to choose I'd go for playing off course...!)

So , enough talk ; please keep on reading my blog as many others have done too.
