BUOC I - Picture Report
Let's face it , actually you don't need me to tell you how nice last weekend was.
I think you felt it too.
The atmosphere is always good when all belgian teams get together to play the first weekend of the competition !
Even though two divisions played on a different location I only saw smiling faces on the fields..
Some players might have been a little disappointed by the results but we sure did have enough sunshine to make up for things like that !!
I had a great weekend and hope you did too.
I felt a lot of focus on and around the fields and that's a good thing.
Everybody's focussed on the games , but once the referee whistles (aaaaah , heeellllll noooo) - sorry once the last point is scored - every ultimate player switches to social mode.
I told you before and I'll tell you again : it's great playing ultimate in a country/scene like this !

Let's Rock !! Let's Roll !!
BUOC is here !
The 2009 championship will begin just tomorrow morning , in less than 24 hours !!
I know everybody's excited ...
Teams have been preparing for this moment for a few months now , people are packing their bags and trying to get a ride to Leuven/Gent ; the heat is getting on ; yes ; the time has come to show your game to the rest of Belgium.
I know you want it ; question is only :
How hard do you want it ??
Because in my humble opinion , there is no super favourite for the gold.
Just as in the BUIC a few teams rise above others , but this doesn't mean a surprise couldn't be in the making.
We'll see.
Most important thing is that we all have fun.
That's why we play this game ; and that's why we are all looking forward to BUOC.
Don't you just love the fact that you get to see everybody you know in this ultimate country?
Everybody will be there (well , actually not, but it's as close as you'll ever get during a frisbee year...)
Ultimate brings people together.
It's magic.
Let's play magic.

Update - BUOC Schedule Division II
An important update on the schedule in second division !

Second round: the top 3 teams of each pool will go to a top pool of 6 (similar to the original system) but they keep the result of 2 games they played in their pool (=> 3 games for each team). They will play 3 games in their second pool.
The bottom 2 teams will go the bottom pool of 4 teams + Wannabeezz (5 teams) the second weekend. This means that 2 teams will play 3 games in the second pool and 3 teams will play 2 games in the second pool.
1 game of the second pool will be played on Sunday of the first weekend.
Elimination stages stay the same: quarters, semis and finals."

Guide To Winning A Championship !
Okay , first off : this is not my guide !
It's written by someone by the name of Hh (I think Hector?) , an American player of a team called the Hodags , from Wisconsin , USA.
Although I don't agree with everything he writes down in his blogpost about "how to win a championship" there are some interesting things written here.
Below are just a few quotes for you to read to get an idea what he's talking about and what points you should consider when getting ready for a championship ; in this case the first weekend of BUOC.
Remember back to when you started playing the sport and fell in love.
When you're awake and thinking disc, visualize reality:
You turning upfield, seeing no cuts, and dumping immediately.
You completing the swing and continue after catching the dump.
Never having the disc past stall 7.
Never looking off an open receiver.
Never being too deep as a stack.
Clearing hard.
Imagine yourself in the positions you will be in going through the correct motions in your head.
Problems arise when 7 players on the field are implementing two different schools of thought.
Your job is not to get D's.
You will still get blocks but you must focus on containing them to doing what YOU want them to do.
You want to win a championship.
You know there are some teams out there you'll have to beat to do it.
Don't panic.
Don't worry about the "who" or the "when", upsets and seeding are out of your control and the only focus should be playing as efficient and aggressive as possible and beating every team you encounter, regardless of who they are and what round it is.
Sidelines win games, help the defense know what's happening, and can tangibly account for several blocks per game. It's easy. Do it.
Eat after every game, drink always, and listen to your body.

But that may be the American way of playing high level ultimate; or his idea of getting pumped up for a championship by talking trash.
I know we don't play like this and I'm glad.
Keep the spirit high.
It's what separates us from football/soccer players.
Keep that in mind and give it your all in just about 60 hours !

BUIC Report - Mooncatchers Champs !
Before you start reading , remember this : you can click the pictures to see them a bit bigger and thus better !
For the third time in a row Mooncatchers catch the Belgian Ultimate Indoor Championship title.
Despite all efforts by other teams for winning this title they managed to do it again.
2004 champs : Freezzzbeezzz
Gentle may have won three competition days , some of those games were pretty close (remember the comeback against Slijpschijven for example,from 7-3 to 7-8...).
For the third time in a row Mooncatchers catch the Belgian Ultimate Indoor Championship title.
Despite all efforts by other teams for winning this title they managed to do it again.
A big bummer for Gentle , having played 20 games this season and only losing 3.
Unfortunately one of those 3 games was critical for claiming the indoor title for this year.
After a few games in playoffs yesterday , it quickly became clear that Moon , Gentle or Huy would win the championship.(I'll get back to the other two teams in a minute..!)
Sunday 08/03/09 , approximately 1PM , Uccle , Brussels , Belgium :
Mooncatchers-Gentle was the next game as announced by the schedule.
A game with high stakes , a game that would determine if Moon became champion or not.
2 Options :
-Moon wins , Moon is champion.
-Gentle wins and three teams would still be in the running for championship.
After 14 incredibly nice points ; offensive flow,defensive heat and sweet grabs on both sides the result could have gone both ways.
7-7 Matchpoint , gamepoint , universe point , golden goal.
Whatever you wanna call it , after 4 turnovers (2 on each side) Pierre (Moon) suddenly decides to get the job done.
Running just half a meter behind his man , who was trying to catch the disc after making a cut in the middle of the field , Pierre lays out.

Perfect timing , perfect D. It has to be said , this was a championship D.
And so the dice rolled in favour of Mooncatchers.
Turnover , pass , score by Arnaud.
Boom , the title belongs to Moon.

2007 champs : Mooncatchers / Slijpschijven (a tie when there no playoffs yet...)

For some a bit surprising to see Moon become champion again , for others nothing but the most normal thing in the world.
I can say they deserve it , but fact is that this year more than one team deserved to win.
Gentle may have won three competition days , some of those games were pretty close (remember the comeback against Slijpschijven for example,from 7-3 to 7-8...).
Missing some of our anciens , we did play an awesome "final" against Mooncatchers and gave it all we got. We had a great season , but in the end it turned out wrong.
Next year ?
Huyltimate deserved the title just as much as anyone else.
Having beaten all teams several times during competition days , and being the only one to prevent Gentle from winning all 16 games , these boys got a nice 2nd place after beating Gentle at the end of the playoff day and playing another wicked indoor season , even without the old old oldies. (you know who...haha)
Slijpschijven , a team with huge talent who has been chasing the indoor championship since their draw with Moon in 2007, showed they got game.
Maybe luck wasn't on their side , but as far as I can imagine I would say beware of these guys next year. They might step it up..
And talking about luck , or should I say unlucky ?
Diabolic Heaven , straight from Hasselt with a bunch of very young players , was the revelation of this season.
Don't forget that yesterday at playoffs , where they seemed to be the team with the least possibilities of becoming champion , they lost every game with only one point difference.
This could have gone a very different way.. Check out what Sigi had to say about it :
"At the start of this BUIC our goal was to play 1 or 2 days in 1st division.
So after day 4 we where incredibly happy, we played 3 days in division 1 and made it to the play-off's.
We gave our best shot against some of the top Belgian teams, had lots of fun and managed again to build up experience at this level.
Unfortunally we lost all our games, but hey, it couldn't have been a closer result.
Against Gentle, Slijpschijven and Mooncatchers we lost with 1 (one) point...
Next year, we will be back, our young players (Tom is only 15 years old) will have more experience, our old players will have...euh...well they'll be there :-)
Oh yeah : Our fans won the price for 'best supporters'!
Thanks to all the teams we played against at this BUIC, thanks to the Mooncatchers for organising and thanks to all the fans who where there at the playoffs"

They did it again !

I don't know how , but they did it again...

A little poor in quality , mostly due to the internet , but still : add in the adrenaline you feel when playing ultimate , the heat and sweat of playing indoor , the rush you get when going for a defense , some people yelling on the sideline and you knów Gerrit (Gentle) did a spectacular D !
And don't forget to vote for the BUIC champion !

PS : for those of you who have doubts about this D , in better quality you can see Gerrit hit the disc before Ben (Diabolic) is even in reach of the disc !
