MissB @ 8Nations Cup

After showing a lot of fighting spirit our national ladies ended at the 5th position , exactly the same place as where the open team ended up (more on that tomorrow !).
11 women resisted the heat (35°C !!!!) and managed to take victory over Spain after a very intens , thriller game where the support pushed the girls to the max and to playing real smooth..!(14-13)
Another victory was easily completed against the UK girls ending at 17-3.
The battle of the lowlands ended in favour of the NL girls but MissB showed to be a very worthy opponent (endscore 15-12)
The french women (who in the end won the tournament) were simply a bit too strong and organised .. 17-8
Ireland 12 - MissB 10 (don't know anything about this game unfortunately)

Belgian Teams @ 8Nations Cup

Upcoming weekend will be a big weekend for belgian ultimate..
Two teams (MissB and an unofficial belgian national open team) will be representing our national honour in Girona , Espagna at the 8NATIONS CUP !
The good thing is we do have a team to go there , because it is important to realise teams like this and participate in international tournaments with national teams.
This creates options for in the future and most importantly wakes us up about our national structure.
Some countries , when they heard about the 8Nations Cup , just had to send out a few emails to the national team or the coaches or maybe the federation and a team was set up.
Belgium had to go through a little more effort (well , certainly in the case of the open team !) to find +-13 players.

Thanks to some enthousiastic players (amongst other Mikey from XLR8RS who went through a big efffort to get everybody together!) Belgium will also be represented in the open division.

Keep your fingers crossed on saturday and sunday and check back here for some results starting on monday evening...

Here's the team list (and oh yeah , due to a few country cancelations they only have 6nations in each division but they still decided to keep the 8nations 'brand' for next years..)

Women's Division:
SPAIN
IRELAND
BELGIUM - MISS B
NETHERLANDS - PRIMAVERA OLANDESE
FRANCE
UNITED KINGDOM

Open Division:
SPAIN
IRELAND
BELGIUM
NETHERLANDS
UNITED KINGDOM
COLOMBIA / VENEZUELA
PS : There's also the Brussels Beach Hat Tourney on saturday and sunday , and the Smack The Beach Up in Mechelen on monday !
Please send me all your pictures and preferably some stories and results as well !!!

Gentle Double Spirit @ Redemption Venice !!

GENTLE WINS SPIRIT AGAIN AT REDEMPTION TOURNAMENT IN VENICE !!

Needless to say I am very proud of this team !
After winning the spirit of the game award at Disconnected a few weeks ago they manage to take home another spirit trophy at the Redemption Tournament in Venice , Italia.
Great thing about this is that there are a lot of players on this team who haven't been around for many years so this must mean they had good examples... :)
BUT : Even bigger news than this is that they actually won both spirit prices , having two Gentle teams playing this tourney and both ending on top of the spirit ranking...
Click on this picture to zoom in on results and spirit scores :

Picture below : Lieven and his teammates intensely celebrating the received spirit honours !

I'll let the pictures do the talking from here on.
You can imagine that going to Venice with a group of about 18 friends to play ultimate on a very hot beach is so nice...

Random Video - Ultimate Highlights

This stuff makes me want to go out and play like hell !

So many discs that would have been dropped to the ground if players didn't put their heart and their entire body in the game to give it the best they got...
Dedication anyone ?

Ultimate at World Games

"The World Games, first held in 1981, are an international multi-sport event , meant for sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games."
So this means ultimate as well !

They may not be the Olympics , but for our sport and many others , this is as high as it gets.
Since 2001 ultimate has been featured amongst +-30 other sports on this high level sports gathering.
Important note : this is only mixed division (COED) and only for the top ranked teams at the latest WUGC (World Ultimate and Guts Championships)

In 2001 in Akita (Japan), Canada beat USA in the final ;
In 2005 in Duisburg (Germany) , USA beat Australia for the gold..

The World Games will start tomorrow 16/07/09 until 26/07/09 at Kaohsiung in Taiwan.
If you have Eurosport2 , probably somewhere on your digital TV channel list (I wouldn't know)make sure to check out the broadcasting schedule , because on the 1st of August I've been told you can watch ultimate on TV. Waw !

Tourney Report - Disconnected 09

I wasn't there myself (playing at Chinon at the same time) but here's a report as written by Ollivier (Mooncatchers) :

"They announced storm, rain and bad weather for almost the whole week-end and finally it was a sunny/burning week-end in Namur-Malonne !

10 teams where present, and so much young players !

Mooncatchers with 7 players between 13 to 16 years, Proppellers (Wadisc ?) and Gentle with a new generation, the University of Namur that Benoît and P-E are organising..Diabolic Heaven with their young boys and girls, Huyltimate, Eulch’timate + some players coming from Bretagne !, Skywalkers from Braine L’Alleud, the ex-“Southampton” juniors “Megaman D” (winner of the 2 previous editions), and the Open -20 Junior National Team.

Now, I want to give you a small report of the final.
A really nice game, the whole game was really close.
It started 3-2 for Megaman, then 4-3 for the Jr Open -20,
8/6 for the Juniors at the half-time.
Then 8/7, 9/7, 9/8, 9/9, 10/9 for Megaman…and then a 20 minutes point...
Megaman was playing zone defense for a few points to try to stop the smooth offense doing by the -20…

Five times the juniors made thousand of passes and then missed the last pass in the endzone, Megaman tried some hucks and missed them a few times too… finally, the juniors scored 10/10 !
Only around 10 minutes left at that moment.

At 12/11 for Megaman, the time was over and so, with the 2 Captain’s Boris and Boris and myself, we decided that if it is 13/11 it’s over and if 12/12, they play cap+1, so to 13, like it was decided before the game (first to 15 or 90 minutes, cap+1 at the end of the time-limit).

Megaman scored on a really nice and really close from the line catch, and so, Megaman should won the tournament for the 3rd year in a row ! 13/11.
Then Benoît told the teams and myself that cap+1 at the end of the time means at the end of the last point played after the time… so Benoît asked for “cap to 14”…
Megaman accepted it really fast without any discussion,
This was really cool and spirited of them, but then the Juniors scored 3 times, and so won 14/13…
Too bad there is no draw in a final, both teams deserved it !!!

What I will remember about all of this is:
1) We have to think, before the game, about all the possibilities that can happen at the end of a game, in case of close scores when the time limit is reached.
2) The spirit in Belgium is really high and more especially the one of the Megaman players, who never discussed for that problem (even if they had the “good” right to do it)
3) For me, that final and that game was a great victory for the Belgian Ultimate and it’s future !!!
4) Let’s start again the practices (or monthly games) for the Open National Team, let’s open those practices to all the young motivated players that want to try their chance for a selection for the next European by Nations in the summer of 2011.
5) Go Belgium !

I also want to thank all the players that work with young players and with this help the growth of the next generation of Crazy Spirited Belgian Ultimate Players !

Olivier"

I can only agree on what Ollie wrote here.
I love the way we keep the spirit high in Belgium , and I like to see all those youngsters play.
Congratulations to them and hope to be there next time for a legendary "junior" final...

Tourney Report - HUT 2009

HARGEN ULTIMATE TOURNAMENT
Check out a report by Sigi (Diabolic Heaven) and also some pictures (mostly by Sigi , others by Joris from Diabolic)

"Last weekend 2 Belgian teams (Diabolic Heaven and F***ING HELLFISH) competed in the Dutch Ultimate Beach Championship in Hargen.
For the 16th time this tournament was organised by players of famous Amsterdam teams (Red Lights, Crunch, ...).
The tournament formula with 18 teams was a bit strange: 3 groups of 18 teams playing round robin games of 18 minutes.
No cap and the game stops immediately on the time signal (so you don't finish the point) draws are possible.
The short games meant you had to be 'hot' and in the game from the first minute on.
Being 'hot' wasn't that difficult because of the superb weather (26° and sunny).
Each team played 6 games the first day.
In the evening there was a good bbq and afterwards our team went to the dunes to chill.
On sunday teams played new ranking pools and finals, again under a sunny sky.
Zocoli Misti won the final against Cambo Cackes in a tense game.
Diabolic Heaven ended on the 8th place, F***ING HELLFISH came out 15th.
Beach Ultimate....it's just great!"
