XEUCF Update

"It's the fourth day of clear blue skies and nice temperatures.
Great weather for ultimate and for spectators."

Right now I'm a little disappointed by the updates...maybe it'll get better later on..
So , biggest problem right now is there's nothing more to find about Mooncatchers or MissB...
We'll have to wait a while before some updates come , let's hope they did well and had some more victories !!

Check out some more tweets (tweets are the messages posted on a website with a huge amount of visitors and twitters) from yesterday :

"So we have a Clapham Skogs semi and a Chev v Karhukopla semi (19:00).
In womens we have Woodchicas vs Leeds and Iceni vs Hotbeaches. 16:30"

"Despite a valiant fightback from Clapham, Skogs triumphed 15-13 in the first semi final."

"The mood on site is really exciting now we're down to the knockout.
There's a real buzz in the air.. "

"Timeout. Streaker. Mexican Wave."

"Helsinki win the masters division!"

And one little sunday news :

"The finals today are
Mixed: Brighton v Frizzly Bears (11:00)
Women : LLLeeds v Iceni (12:50)
Open : Chevron v Skogs (14:40)"

Man , I would have loved being there to witness all of this. Too bad it's impossible to follow of all this with some live streaming or something , or even better : on the TV !! I think the spectators are up for some classy high level ultimate today....

If you want some more info on the semi finals and so ; here's the link to the saturday newsletter :

TEAM TOO - Random Pictures 1

Check out Hakke (final score) and myself (catching Hakke's upside that was way too far..) getting horizontal during the final of the Burla Beach Cup 2009 against the Austrian team Flugsaurier.
Endscore 13-9 , mission accomplished and crowd pleased !
Both pictures by Robin (Propellors) , and much more pictures by him and other people coming in the next few days !!
PS Click pictures for a bigger view.
PPS : this is why my blog is called Get Horizontal , not because diving or laying out is so cool or anything , but mainly because this is a metaphore for giving it all you got.
Me too I thought that this disc was going down , but in a split second decided to go for it and still try to catch it.
I landed in the sand with the disc between the tips of my fingers and felt that it was good.
Good to give it all you got , good to be on the beach and great to be a part of a unique experience like Team Too...

Moon's First Friday Game @ XEUCF

Sipoo Odd Stars 16 v Mooncatchers 14

Sounds real close , luck should turn ...
Check these twitter messages by the way :

"Skogs 15 - CUSB 13. Lots of "intensity" out there"

"Ragnarok beat Fire in sudden death!"

MissB First Friday Game

Brilliance 14-12 Miss B

Too bad... But for all we know this was a great game by MissB..
Can't wait to here some stories..

Moon's Second Game Yesterday - XEUCF

Moon 12 - 15 Team 1935

Our Brussels boys seem to be giving the other teams a hard fight...
Maybe they could have won , maybe not .. I only know scores and nothing else for now..
Let's hope they get a victory today ! Come on , Moon !

If you're wondering what this is all about , or what the hell XEUCF is , scroll down !

XEUCF - "Good Morning Europe !"

"Good morning Europe! It's another amazing sunny day here.
We've swapped our jeans for shorts and are getting excited for the Ultimate !"

Okay , I know you mainly want belgian information , but if you're really interested in European ultimate and the XEUCF , check their twitter website at http://twitter.com/xEUCF
I'll keep posting all belgian results here , but if you wanna know who won the showcase game between Clapham and Skogs and how they did it , you should check out the tweets.
(Clapham won by one after sudden death by the way..)
Quite interesting to read about all kinds of things like this : LLLeeds women, top seeds in their group, won 15-6 against Primavera.
Would be cooler though if they would be writing more tweets about how MissB&Moon are doing..
But hey , no worries , I'll try to give you as much info as possible right here.
Go Belgium !

XEUCF Is Here !!

eXtended European Ultimate Championship Finals starting on thursday morning.
80 teams are participating, across 4 Divisions: 38 in Open Division; 20 Mixed; 16 Womens and 6 Masters
I'm still euphoric and floating on a cloud since the Viareggio victory with Team Too , but it's already time to move on to the next big thing in European ultimate.... XEUCF is here , and we've got two belgian teams representing our national honours : MissB and our belgian outdoor champs Mooncatchers.

Here's a little preview as written by Tof from Mooncatchers :

"From the very beginning we wanted to go for it and we are happy and proud to defend the belgian chances in this competition.
Unfortunatley, there won't be an open belgian european champion this year because we are in second division then we may reach only the 9th place of the tournament. (In the women's division everything is possible, GO MISS B!)

Even the 9th place will be hard work! In our pool we have :

Cota Rica (Italian Champs)
Team 1935 (from Denmark)
Sipoo Odd stars (Finnish stars)

If we finnish in the top 2 of this pool we have a cross game with the pool H (EMO GB, Wall City G, Flying bisch IT, Helsinki FI)
And if we win this game we have a barrage game against a team of division 1 to get to the places 9-16.
Then quarters, half and final.

You may follow the results on the twitter
xeucf2009.org or on your favourite blog!!!

See you on Monday for the report!

Tof

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONCATCHERS!!!"

So , both Mooncatchers and our national ladies team MissB will be having some hard games.
One thing is sure , we should be proud of both teams making it to the XEUCF , because this is an important event to be present at with belgian teams.
My thoughts will be going out to both teams , hoping that they are able to have a few stunts against big teams ; but even if they don't , that they just manage to play some good ultimate and learn from more experienced teams...
Nevertheless , I still believe in the power of both teams.
Moon is a team that surprised more than once before and if they find the good flow the sky will be the limit....
As for MissB , the same thing : they have a lot of really talented , good women and they have been preparing for a while now so anything is possible.
I'm looking forward to hearing their stories , and you know I'll give you some updates right here throughout the next four days.
Below are the poules with our belgian teams in it , MissB starts off against the legendary Woodchicas (last year's European champ at EUCF08) , Moon gets a go at the Italian outdoor champs Cota Rica...

Click the pictures above for a bigger view.
If you want more info check out http://www.xeucf2009.org/ , or if you want live updates check out http://twitter.com/xeucf
If you're belgian , (or lazy ?) I suggest you just check back right here at your favourite webspot.
I'll give you daily updates on both our belgian teams , as far as I can find info !
Go , Belgium !!!
PS too bad you and me are stuck here and not playing XEUCF....

Tourney Report - TEAM TOO @ BBSea + TEASER VIDEO

Amongst about ten other belgian teams at Burla Beach Cup 2009 (which I'll tell you much more about in the next few posts !!) was one team by the name of TEAM TOO.
For those of you who were wondering what this was all about , here's the deal : nostalgia , friendship , spirit , warm feelings and especially goesting (="wanting something")..
A team with friends , brought together by Wouter Vondynamite for a very special occasion.
Not that we ever played Viareggio with this team before , but the point was to bring old friends and new friends together to play the game they all love , and to make a dream come true.
I would say W succeeded in his mission , and all of us tried as much as we could to help make the dream come true...
This was without a doubt the most amazing experience I've ever had in my about 7 or 8 year lasting ultimate career. Real close to comparing it with winning the belgian outdoor championship , but just more special in a way.
Friends that brought a good game to the pitch , each and every player giving it all they got.
Resulting in winning all poule games (including an under-achieving Sexxxpensive with only two of the original players , a hard fighting Ricardo's team playing as a mix of Freezzzbeezzz and Gentley's, the organisers named Flying Bisc giving us the hardest and also first game of the weekend...) ; kicking La Fotta Bologna's (with a few Cota Rica players) ass big time during quarter finals (13-4!) , cracking Quattro Stagioni for the second time of the weekend in semi-finals and managing to break the highly intensive O&D of the very physical Flugsaurier in finals ending somewhere at 13-9
During the whole weekend I've seen my teammates smiling on the field , and that's what we wanted.
As Wouter said : "It's who we are , and who we will always be ..."
I can not begin to tell you how special this felt to me , and probably to all of my teammates.
People like Sikk'n (Glenn) who thought me how to play ultimate back in the days when we used to play in Brugge and is my example of dedication to the game ; Kimpie,Wouter,Jelle,Ine,Dalton,Heinzzz (who unfortunately couldn't make it due to his knee injury) who were the reason I started playing ultimate in the first place and who have always been a huge source of inspiration to me ; Morlie who's always been at my side as a good friend/co-player/motivator/nowadays-coach ; and other people like Zach,Karel,Johnny and Hakke who are all in their way phenomenal on and off the pitch ...
It's been an honour to play by their sides and I can only wish everybody who is into this game to experience moments like this yourselves.
It's what makes this game so special , and distinguishes it from other sports.
We are ultimate players.
Better realise it...
Thanks to my team for a great weekend , thanks to the ladies (Ine,Griet,Mele) for taking such good care of us , thanks to all belgians for supporting us all weekend long and thanks to everybody for being who you are , and making this game so very special.
Proud to play !
Check out a little teaser on the upcoming documentary on Team Too at Viareggio:

More pictures and videos coming soon , check back for the documentary and expect much more info on the other belgian teams at BBSea as soon as I can get my hands on more info...
PS : You'll probably read this on wednesday so tonight MissB and Mooncatchers will be leaving for XEUCF in London... Come on , Belgium !!!

Make a Dream Come True...

Okay , I'm all packed and ready to head over to Italia to play the Burla Beach Cup 2009.
"But what's he so excited about ?" , you might ask yourself.
I'll give you 12 reasons :
WouterVondynamite+Glenn+Dalton+Kimpie+Jelle+Morlie+Hakke+Zach+Karel+Johnny+Bommie+Ine
Sounds like enough reasons to be excited.
Can't wait to play in this (already legendary to me) team named Team Too.
Originally created in Wouter Vondynamite's mind , reality in less than 24 hours.
Time to witness the fitness.
I've been longing for this moment for a long time now !!!
Expect a BIG BIG report somewhere next week.
Enjoy your weekend while some 10 or 11 teams will be rocking the beach in Viareggio..
Cheers

TIME TO FLY !!

My mind is set for Viareggio.
Leaving for Burla Beach Cup in a day and a bit.
Can't wait to rock and roll...
Expect a preview on Team Too somewhere tomorrow.
(Team Who ? Check back sometime on wednesday...)

BUWOC Report Part II

Check out another little report as written by Patricia (Mooncatchers) on the Belgian Ultimate Women's Outdoor Championship last weekend..
All pictures in this post taken by Ollivier (Moon).

"On Sunday September 13th in Brussels , the women from Xelles organised the BUWOC which was hoping to have all the Belgian women/girls play in a national meeting. Unfortunately, not all the clubs were present; some mixed to have a full team.

The Slijpwijven and the Trancheuzen from Aalter had a very promising team, with I think 2 adults and many girls who were at the EYUC in Vienna .
The Soleil-ladies were a mix (if I’m not mistaking) of players from Schijnwerpers (Antwerpen), Freespect (Mechelen) and a few from Propellers or Jet Set; they too had mostly young players so they lost all their games but they had a good time and learned a lot.
The Gentle team was composed of some Gentle ladies plus 4 or 5 Sponge Babes from Holland .
The Bxl-R crew was mostly Xelles with 3 Mooncatgirls.
Besides the Belgian teams, the 5th one was Primavera Olandese, Holland ’s national team (a combination of experienced + younger players).

We all had a great day with some exciting games and beautiful play from everyone.
It was a good challenge for all of us to play against Primavera, even if nobody scored much against them but it’s always good for the experience.

Our 1st game against the ladies from Aalter started well for us (Bxl-R), 7-2, but they made a nice come-back to 7-5; in the end, experience and a few long throws gave us the advantage.
Later in the day, they lost by only 1 point (6-5) against Gentle after an exciting game: it was 5-4 for Aalter, so they were close to winning it and proved that their level was almost equal to the one of the Gentle and Bxl-R.

We had a round-robin between the 5 teams, and then we were supposed to have a final between the first 2.
The Dutch won all their games easily and were rather tired because the games were 50’ long, so they chose not to play the final.
It so happened that the last game of the round-robin was to be the “final” between the 2 strongest teams of the day after Primavera.

The score was close all through the game, Bxl-R was leading 4-2 then 7-5. The wind had become rather strong in the after-noon so we started playing zone-defence with some success; then Gentle played zone as well, with a wall of 4 players which gave us trouble against the wind. They came back to 7-7, then 8-8, cap +1… Bxl-R was in offence with the wind but the 2nd pass was hand-blocked and, after a quick fast break, the winning point was scored by Gentle, 9-8.

The Spirit of the Game was perfect and great all day long (as always in Belgian ultimate), and the atmosphere was really good; we could feel that all the players present were happy to play in women’s division, and they said that they wish to do it more often.
Let’s organise more days like that !!!
Go Belgian ladies !

Patricia"

Tourney Report - BUWOC 2009

Check out some pictures made by Lore (Gentle) and a report by Nele M (Gentle) :
(Report is freely translated by me so...)

"TEAMS:
Gentle Babes (8 gentleladies zie foto's + 3 Amsterdam Sponge Babes: Lisa, Marieke en Franscesca)
Slijpwijven (2 slijpwijven Anouk B en Elke + quite a few Trancheuzen ladies)
Soleil Ladies (female version of Coup Soleil which is a mix of Schijnwerpers and Freespect , with two extra propellors I think..)
Bxl-R (Brusseleir was a very good mix of XL ladies and Moonladies)
Primavera...(yes , indeed , thé Primavera Olandesa !)

CONCEPT: round robin in which in the end number 3 had to play number 4 as a rematch and the same for 1 and 2. The 5th team had one game less on their program...

About BUWOC :
With Primavera on the teamlist this wasn't an official belgian ultimate Women's Outdoor Championship , but the fact that this event happened will be important in the future !
Happy smiling faces all day long, only women on the field but unfortunately a little too few male support on the sideline...
All the girls who were there were pretty excited about this championship.
Another important remark is this :Primavera had a special training day on saturday in preparation of the XEUCF in London next weekend.
They managed to win all there games easily with no more than 3 points scored against them per game..
This lead them to decide that they wouldn't play final , so they could go home a little earlier , and the final score of the final wouldn't have been a surprise..
This decision made it more exciting for the other teams to get the first place.. !"

Up next is a report on the GentleBabes games , I didn't have time to go through the effort of translating (sorry for all ye non-dutch speakers out there :) ) ; also by Nele M :

"GENTLEBABES

So , even though I wasn't there I can imagine that all the girls had a really good time there.
We'll see what this means for the future and maybe more of these events will start happening in and around Belgium.
If I'm not mistaken Nele and the Gentle Babes are already thinking about maybe organising something themselves , so you know there's a good thing going on in belgian ultimate !
Another congrats to Gentle and a special thumbs up for the organising Xl-ladies !
And "Merci" to Nele and Lore for sending me the info and pics !
If you have anything else about your team that might interest other belgian ultimate players , feel free to contact me ! (my email is on the left hand side of this blog !)

Hey Ladies !

Just a quick announcement that Gentle has won today's BUWOC.
Maybe not an official Belgian Ultimate Women's Outdoor Championship but still a real nice effort by the XL girls to get some belgian and dutch women's teams together to play a one day tourney.
So congrats to the Gentle ladies and expect some more news about this in the next few days !
PS Viareggio Burla Beach Cup in about 4 days , yeeeehaaa !

BBC II - Tourney Report Part 1

As I wrote in my previous post (which was just to quickly announce JetSet as winners of BBC) : WOW !
This was truly an amazing weekend.
I know I've said (written) this more than once about other tournaments but this one really blew me off my feet a little bit.
Okay we had a lot of wind (especially the first half of saturday) but that didn't bother anyone (at least mentally it didn't)...
I saw some amazing things , of which the one that confronted me the most was the fact that the general level of play was really high.
This is a vibe that's been coming up the last few years , without many people actually noticing.
This weekend I think we've seen it all.
In the next few lines I'll give you my opinion on the top4 teams but overall the level of play is rising.
Standards are being set and boundaries are being broken.
There's a whole lotta motivation around and it shows.
Players wanna learn , teams wanna step it up.
Even though beach ultimate is an entirely different game , this weekend showed some pretty nice team flows.
And that brings me to the top of the notch : the 4 semi finalists.
Final ranking of those :
1.JETSET !!!
2.Freezzzbeezzz
3.Gentle
4.Mooncatchers
These 4 teams all showed an enormous amount of fighting spirit and this could be seen on the field.
4 teams who were -at least in my opinion- the teams most likely to take home the number 1 trophy at the second Belgian Beach Cup.
4 teams who actually deserved to win..... but respect where respect belongs so JetSet can call themselves Kings of the Beach for an entire year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Two extrememy hardfought semi-finals were only the beginning.
Jetset started kicking some Moon ass at the start of the game leading 5-1.
After an amazing comeback by last year's champs they managed to get it back at 7-7.
In the end JetSet proved to strong and took their place in finals winning 7-9.
On the other pitch , at the same time , there was what could be called an honorary battle.
Gentle , with quite a few ex-Freezzzbeezzz players against the ancient home team Freezzzbeezzz from Brugge.
A hard start of the game with some really nice plays proved that these teams were a great match.
For those who were looking , this could probably have been a final as well.
Both teams scoring every point be it upwind or downwind, making almost no mistakes and giving the crowd what they want : nice offensive flow , hard defense , sweet throws and some amazing catches.
From 1-1 to 2-2 to 3-3 all the way up to 7-7 in a game where every player was really on fire...
Then Gentle couldn't keep the heads cool and made some little mistakes which were punished by the Beezzz, who then took the game after a very "thriller-y" cap to 9 with 9-7.

So there it was , the final of BBC II : Freezzzbeezzz-JetSet.
Hard against hard.
I think this will be a sunday afternoon a lot of players will remember.
JetSet crowned themselves Kings of the Beach with an awesome play with truly amazing offense ánd defense.
But needless to say , the coin could have flipped the other way.
Freezzzbeezzz , with a lot of young players and a few veterans also proved to be worthy of the title.
Maybe they had a little more problems keeping the heads cool and therefore had a few small errors , but still they played a massive final as did their opponents from Leuven.
Both teams completely on a roll , in a game that Belgium has seen few times before.
A thriller like nobody could have imagined in advance.
A game to 11 , which ended in a cap to 12.
A game with a lot of Ooooh's and Aaaaah's by the audience.
A game every spectator must have enjoyed.
A game which proved why playing beach ultimate is so fun : getting horizontal.
But not only that.
Both teams played a final that was on an amazingly high level and managed to please the crowd on both sides of the pitch.
I won't name any names because both teams really played as a team and showed Belgium what they were worth , but you can probably still remember some actions that happened on the field.
Me oh My , I've seen some mouth-opening catches , D's and throws on both sides.
And then there was silence : 11-11
Sudden death , universe point , golden goal , whatever you wanna call it but it felt exciting (and I wasn't even playing :) )

Don't quite remember the entire action but JetSet managed to send a halflong downwind pass straight into the corner of the endzone for Rikke to catch and score the winning point.
JETSET KINGS OF THE BEACH , and well deserved !
A team with quality players, a nice mix of experience and upcoming talent (and some crazyness), a bunch of cool and spirited guys in a team that has been hunting for a belgian title a few years in a row now and finally made it again !
Congrats to the Leuven crew and Freezzzbeezzz for such a nice final , and congrats to all for another weekend filled with belgian attitude.

All pictures in this post by Raf (Schijnwerpers) , big thanks for his once again lovely pictures of BBC.
(Je fotografie intrigeert en inspireert me , man.. Chapeau !)
And another big thanks to the organisers Freezzzbeezzz and Slijpschijven !
Check back soon for some more pictures of BBC and especially one really , really funny one..
Cheers

Tourney Report - DH @ Monsterball

Check out another little report on Diabolic Heaven playing the Monster Ball tournament in Den Haag , Holland.
Written by Sigi , unstoppable frisbee-addict and most likely Get Horizontal's second biggest reporter/journalist (well , actually he's way bigger than me , but you get the idea , don't you..)
Thanks for the pictures , the report and the effort , Sigi , and keep on spreading your enthousiasm and passion for ultimate.

"Last weekend 3 Belgian Teams (XLR8rs, Diabolic Heaven, The Monster Under Your Bed (= DH2) competed in Monsterball, a beach tournament near Den Haag.

Most of you will remember last year’s Belgium Beach Cup where there was a strong wind blowing over the fields.
In Monster 24 teams struggled with similar weather conditions which made it hard to score up-wind.

Diabolic Heaven had to play XLR8rs in the first group stage and the 2 Belgian teams made it a fun game.
Diabolic took the victory but I can’t remember the exact score …
At the end of day 1 Diabolic 2 had the bad luck that 3 teams had the same number of victories but DH2 scored 1 point less than the team who could play for the middle ranked places.
Diabolic 1 won all their games and could play quarter finals on Sunday.
On Sunday DH won the quarter final against “UFO and friends” and also beat “Ah Ouh Puc” in the semi final (with 3 girls playing against men twice their size).

The final had to be played against “Zoccoli Misti” (mostly -ex- Red Lights players) who reached the final with an impessive score rate of 91 to 7.
The experienced “Zoccoli Misti” players where to strong and won the final with 13-8.
The joy after playing a nice final only became bigger when Diabolic Heaven also won the Spirit of the game!

Too bad I don’t know how the tournament ended for XLR8rs so I can’t give you their results. Despite the weather it was a nice tournament with the campsite very close to the 6 playing fields.
Breakfast and bbq were served at an exotic beach club.
The Bondi Beach club was also the place to party Saturday night, this tournament certainly is a must for next year...."

Congratulations to Diabolic Heaven for having so much motivation and dedication to this game.
Playing all those tournaments (Hat's , Beach tournaments , EYUC , NJK ...) will definitely pay off in the future (or might already right now..?)
PS : Belgian Beach Cup coming up in just two more days ! Better be ready... !
