Tourney Report - Schreeuw van de Meeuw

Check out a little report by Sigi on last weekend's tourney :
"Last weekend 2 Belgian teams participated to Schreeuw Van De Meeuw, an indoor coed tournament in Nijmegen, NL.
Diabolic Heaven had the honour to open the tournament at 9.30 so for most of us it was a short night.
Mooncatchers had a bit more luck, their first game started at 10.45.
4 groups of 4 teams where formed.
Most striking was that a dropped pull didn't lead to a turn-over.
This speeded up the game because every team tried to catch the pull asap to start their offence. Every game in round 1 took 23min.
The clock counted from 25min to 0. So when time was over and the last point wasn't finished you had to play on to make that last point.
If it took 1 minute, the next 2 teams still had one minute left to get ready for the game.
If the last point took 3 minutes the next 2 teams had an actual playing time of 22min instead of 23 minutes.
This might sound a bit strange but in real terms it worked out well and the timetable was followed strictly so you always knew when you had to play your next game.
At the end of day 1 Diabolic Heaven reached the high pool while mooncatchers had bad luck by finishing 3th in their group, based on score average...
Dinner and party were at a very cosy club near the sportscenter.
During the evening there was a beerrace where the 2 Belgian teams met in the final :-).
Even a photofinish couldn't tell who won so there was a rematch, won by Mooncatchers!
On day 2 we played some nice games against teams named Orange Lizards, Frankfurt-Amsterdam and Gotinger 7. The final was played by Accidente de Masse (a dutch pickup team with a lot of players of Mouthfull of Sand) and UFO.
Accidente de Masse was to strong and won this edition of SVDM.
And last but not least...Mooncatchers won the spirit of the game!! For most of us it was the first indoor experience of this season and we still have to adjust to this 'other' way of playing Ultimate but we had a great time and are looking forward to the BUIC!"
And another report in Dutch as found on the website of the organisers (sent to me by Fery , Diabolic Heaven--thanks!) :

De vooral Utrechts georienteerde combi Accidente de Masa ( what’s in a name ? ) was een maatje te groot voor dit UFO-team. Met 15-5 kwam er een einde aan deze prima opening van het Indoor-seizoen."
Thanks to Fabrice,Sigi and Fery for sending me these pics and reports !
PS : in the post below here , with the video of the hammer dome : the upside wasn't thrown by Fabrice but by who else than Ollivier of course.
How could I be mistaken , he showed a whole generation how to throw hammers .... !

The Hammer Dome !

Check out this little video on last year's final of the Objectif Moon tourney , somewhere in february 2009.

A sweet hammer (upside) by correction : OLLIVIER , and a real nice catch by Tof !

If you're interested in playing there read this :

20-21 of february = Objectif Moon...
Already 10 years that the mooncatchers are flying around european pitches, trying to catch tthe moon!
To celebrate that, we'll make a particular effort this year for our annual tournament.

Some teams have already shown an interest to join but you have still the chance to be part of the trip!

Send an email asap to objectifmoon@gmail.com

Brussels, 8 teams, 1 or 2 women on the line, the "hammer dome", 2 breakfasts, 1 dinner, 2 parties, gift, round robin, surprises, low cost belgian beers,...

--------------------------------------------------------------------

By seeing this I'm already getting excited about the upcoming indoor season...

By the way , check your hard disk and try to find some more of your ancient pictures and videos and send them over if you will.....

Random Ultimate Thoughts

Just came back from Gentle practice and been thinking about one thing (well , actually one frisbee related thing amongst many many others, but hey..) : As far as I can guess about 90% of all defenses done are due to a bad judgement by the thrower.
So , as a defender you still did a good job by being where you should be to intercept the disc , but mainly it is the thrower who makes a mistake or a misjudgement (by not being able to think about your position in relation to the person he or she is throwing to)
It's easy to say that if you only throw certain passes , that you won't turn over ; but it has a certain truth in it.
If anybody agrees or even totally disagrees with me , just gimme a shout in the comment box.
For reallllly experienced players this might seem peanuts , but it was something that crossed my mind while practicing my in-game-throws tonight.
And for those of you who couldn't care less about this , I'm not gonna post naked women as asked before , but I'll just give you a little indoor video in the next post (in about a minute).

Lazy Sunday ??

What has been a lazy sunday for some , was a long awaited day by others.
Today in Leuven the Jetset crew held their second edition of the FONSKE CUP.
Say what ??
Well , I'll let Kasse's videocamera do the talking.
Here's a report of last year's Fonske Cup , the very first edition of this already legendary Leuven Discgolf Tourney :

And this sunny sunday had more in it than you could ever imagine...!
Some 15 Gentle players were in the Dardennen this weekend doing what you couldn't guess:
Having a cycling weekend in preparation of the (also) legendary upcoming trip : "Gentle Goes Ventoux"(spring 2010).

So , under great leadership of Matthew (Gentle) , these guys and girls already had a training weekend to prepare their legs for climbing the legendary Mont Ventoux... !
Yes , you heard it right , imagine 15 ultimate players on a bike climbing this hill/mountain where Tom Simpson found his last restplace...
Can't wait to hear stories from the practice weekend , and results from the second Fonske Cup !
Oh , and here's a little picture of Mont Ventoux , especially for Rob.
Don't get used to it , though !

Keep on reading !
PS : and as this wasn't enough : Diabolic Heaven and Mooncatchers played an indoor tournament in Nijmegen (NL) called "Schreeuw van de Meeuw"
Bring on those reports or crazy stories !!

All pictures above still by Ward as mentioned in the previous post (yeah that's right , the one down there )

Random Pictures - BBC by Ward

Gentle = Dutch Coed Champion !!

Here's the deal : Gentle was invited to replace a team that dropped out last minute of the Dutch Mixed Championship.
We went over to play in Rijswijk (NL) on the 4th and 18th of october ; won all our games and in the last game , which wasn't officially a final but could have been, we beat Gronical Dizziness and ended up on the very first spot.
We congratulated GD on being the champion although we beat them , but after a victory drink in the bar , the organisers came up to us and donated us the number one cup ; therefore officially crowning Gentle to be the 2009 Dutch Mixed Champions !!!
Looks like this might become the rebirth of the Benelux cup held in Brussels two years ago...
Anyhow , thanks to the 'Netherlandians' for inviting us , and thanks to all the Gentle (and Freezzzbeezzz and Jetset players) for making this happen !
Oh and by the way : Back in 2001 or 2002 the good old Freezzzbeezzz managed to do the same thing in the Dutch indoor competition !
Back then they weren't officially crowned as champs but they still remember it as one of the greatest accomplishments in Freezzzbeezzz history (and it was quite legendary so I've been told!)
Picture above : a little bit strange , but still really nice !!
We tried to tell Ted he could give it to GD but he said the organisation insisted because we won fair and square.
There's a healthy rivalry going on between Belgium and the Netherlands , and even though I like the Ollanders I can't end this post without writing something like Hup , Holland , Hup !

This one was really FOR ALL THE MARBLES .. !

WFDF Rules on your iPhone

Yes , you heard it right : a special application for you to easily track certain rules in the WFDF rulebook straight from your iPhone.
Not that I've got one , but I can imagine this could be useful if you're talking about a certain rule and you need to instantly check it...
Made by Claudius Kirsch, a real friendly German ultimate fanatic and designer ("I'm a designer: Interactive stuff, web stuff, installation stuff, all sorts of stuff. As long as it is fun to make...")

Check it out below , and if you installed it on your iphone drop a comment in the comment box and/or give Claudius some feedback (you can find his email at the bottom of this post) :

"Hi everybody!
I just released a small application which brings the WFDF Rules of Ultimate to your iPhone. It's just the right thing if you need a quick look at a certain passage between games. And of course a good chance to show your newest gadget to your teammates!
Here's the iTunes link which brings you to my free app:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=332602715&mt=8
The app is pretty easy to use and allows to view the rules in portrait or landscape mode.
The text is zoomable and you can switch between translations in the app. Right now this includes English and German, more languages may follow.
I would be happy to hear some reactions in the comments or by mail, feel free to drop me a line if you have any suggestions.
Cheers,
Claudius Kirsch,
Germany"

Random Pictures - Kwik,Kwek & Kwak

Funny thing about the BBC trophy is that the only thing still floating (besides the fish) is the number 3.
The B ; the B and the C all went down to the bottom...
It's been about 6 weeks ago since Jetset won the Belgian Beach Cup and it seems like the fish are trying to remind me of it..
But hey , our Leuven friends deserved this victory as I've written before..
We do have more fish though !
Kwik , Kwek and Kwak in top shape.
And for those of you wondering what the h*ll I am talking about , this fishbowl was our award as bronze medalists...
One fish for first place and so on...
Keep 'em flying !
PS how bout the Jetset (1) and Freezzzbeezzz (2) fish ? Anyone ?

Random Pictures - Funny

Not that any of us will know about these guys , but both pictures are still funny...

Blockstack TV @ xEUCF

Okay , I've been sitting (or better laying down) at home for the last three days being sick and I don't even have the energy to post some things on my blog.
Here's some videos of the Blockstack crew at xEUCF.
If you're wondering who "Steve and Tom" are , they are two enthousiastic British ultimate players who make an online video journal on all kinds of events related to ultimate.
More info on their website at http://www.blockstack.tv/ and off course all previous episodes to be found there.
This takes a while to watch , but in my case nowadays that's a good thing !
And if you're not really really interested in xEUCF but just want to see some cool action shots of semi's and finals , I suggest you only watch the second part "Part 2 , The Glory".

Hope to be up and running by tomorrow ...
Keep 'em flying !

Gentle @ Dutch Coed Championships

Picture above : Man and woman of the match :)
A short report of the Gentley's at the NL mixed champs yesterday.

Day two out of three (don't know why we didn't get invited for the first one , maybe it was too late or too far ..) Gentle went down (or should I say up in this case) to Rijswijk for a fun day of mixed ultimate.
After a two hour drive on sunday morning we got there with two of the three cars that left from Belgium.
We didn't get enough players in Gent to play this championship and so we picked up Freek , Jolle and Silke from Jetset to join us on a sunny sunday.
Unfortunately they (+Nele M from Gentle who drove with them) had a little trouble finding the exact location (which I must admit was a little hidden)

But anyhow , three games in one afternoon :

First one against UFO , quite easy victory even though we missed four players for half the match..
Second one against Ultimus Prime who had a few real decent players and gave us a good fight.
We still managed to win , I think it was with 1 or 2 points difference , after having dropped the disc a whole lot of times , each and every one of us.
So this is what you get without focus or warm-up...
Third one against Gronical Dizzines , who apparently came in 3d at the XEUCF two weeks ago.
We got off to a good start , and kept the vibe going even though GD really had some amazing plays (and a girl that kept throwing perfectly placed hucks , both back- and forehand)
Anyway , they only had half the team that played XEUCF and so we were still glad to have won this last game.
After having some fruit salad and a drink we headed home for a lazy sunday evening.
Thanks to Gerrit,Wouter,Elisabeth,Lies,Dajo,Ester,Jolle,Silke,Arne,Marlies,Freek,Nele M (and me?) for being there.

Oh , I was actually only gonna tell you why we were there ; well , here goes :
One dutch team cancelled their participation so they were missing a team for the first division.
They sent out an invitation to some friends (being Jetset and Gentle) and as our Leuven friends didn't get a team together , Gentle was proud to represent the belgian honour in a Ducth competition where the level was maybe just a little disappointing (although maybe good for us , since we were all really in a chill mood , plaiyng with no pressure...)

Anyhow , we'll be playing the 3d day as well , we'll let you know how it went.

By the way , if anybody has anything interesting on belgian ultimate , please send it over (really ! : anything !) --- I'm a bit sick and at home right now..

Keep 'em flying !

ps Gerrit , kzijnt vergeten maat ... iets met rabbits of zo ?

Some Ultimate Thoughts (around midnight...)

Tonight I've seen a lot of things I like.
A bunch of players gathering to play the game they all love , but with a certain determination in mind.
This week has been the first official practice week of this season for us Gentley's ; and it's looking good.
I'm pretty sure this is going to be a good year.
Don't think I am talking about BUOC or any other championships and tournaments , I'm just feeling a certain vibe in which everybody's motivated to step the game up , both fysically and mentally.
And I do believe that's what you need : motivation.
Motivation is what makes a player , but also what makes a team.
I've been thinking about how to improve my own game , and how I can help my team to move forward.
This is a thought that I didn't have a few years back , when it was all just about learning how the game works.
A little quote as you probably heard before on the radio :

If you're always trying to get to the top , you don't get to the bottom of nothing.

Well , need I say more.
Even in ultimate this is so true.
First you learn how to throw ; then you learn how the game works ; then you try to get good at playing the game and at a certain point you will most probably become a good or an OK player ; and for many players it ends somewhere over there (at the so called "plateau").
I believe it's those players who have determination or dedication (and some talent of course) to keep learning wherever their ultimate career is at , that make it to the bottom (and top) of this game.
The bottom being something good in this case , the basics , the foundation of what you are doing out there on the ultimate pitch .
Consciously realising what you are doing is an underestimated aspect of playing this game.
If you think about how and where you are going to run , you'll be better than somebody who does the same thing he's always been doing because someone once told him to.
Maybe not in the beginning , but in the end dedication and motivation win.
That's what getting to the bottom of something is.
Learning and having the power of will to keep learning , even though you might already be a good player.
Come to think of it , it's like that in many things in life , but I won't get you started on that.
These are my ultimate thoughts.
I wish you all a pleasant night , hope you keep on reading.

PS : does anybody care about thoughts like these ? or do you just want some hardcore ultimate action shots ?? Well , just to make sure the persons answering no to my first question also get pleased , here's one :
And if you don't care about those fancy players on the other side of the Atlantic , here's Rik (Jetset) straight from you know where : "Rikke from Belgium" !

Picture was taken at Windmill 07 , don't ask me by who..
Till the next time around ! ¨
PS didn't anybody take some more pictures of MissB at XEUCF ?
Where are all those readers...
Cheers !
