Neighbour Champions - United Kingdom

Two days ago the champions of the United Kingdom were crowned.
For those of you who have been loyal readers of this blog you might remember I announced the German champions somewhere in august last year and from now on I would like to do this on a more regular basis for nations surrounding us.
It's always nice to know what's going on in our neighbour's countries so here's the deal :

Clapham Ultimate won the UKU (United Kingdom Ultimate) nationals in open division for the 10th time in a row !!!! An amazing record was set by beating one of their biggest opponents Chevron Action Flash, who won the xEUCF last year and thus have the title of European Club Champions.
Fire of London took 3d place.

In Women's division the title of UKU Champions went to LeedsLeedsLeeds after beating another very strong team Iceni.

Congrats to both teams and let us belgians only try to take an example on how the sport is being played and more importantly the level of play in the UK...

TIPS & TRICKS VIII - How To Layout Safely

Here are some tips and tricks you can use to learn more about laying out (= getting horizontal) while playing ultimate frisbee.
As you can see in the picture below laying out for a disc means you have to give it all you got, and never ever think you can't get to the disc anymore. Remember Andrew Fleming's legendary catch at the quarter finals of WUCC 2010 in Prague ? (Picture by José Pires, http://joez.smugmug.com/
Thanks to Robin for sending this to me and thanks to the unknown author of the article (found at http://www.ehow.com/how_2365146_layout-safely-ultimate-frisbee.html ) :

"Laying out can be a glorious thing in ultimate frisbee. A head long dive to grab an errant throw or to block a potential goal gets the attention of the crowd and gains momentum for your team. While it takes only guts to begin laying out - it is more challenging to do so safely. Laying out improperly can put your body parts at risk of being injured and also poses a risk for your competitors. Staying healthy is important so learning to layout in a manner that limits risk to yourself and those around you is a worthwhile exercise.

-Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
-Things You'll Need: Your body.
-Instructions :

1 Survey the area in front of you quickly as you prepare to layout. Are there obstructions on the field or sideline that you might hit? Other players in the area that can not see you? You want to land on the grass in front of you and nothing else.

2 Leave your feet in control. In order to land safely you should leave your feet as part of an extended controled movement rather than flopping or flailing about wildly. Layout with a purpose or goal in mind and this will help you stay in control of your body throughout.

3 Land on your chest. While it may seem logical to break your fall with your shoulders or arms, the safest way to land is on your chest. By providing a large surface area to take in the impact you are less likely to hurt yourself than if you landed on a single wrist, knee or arm. Although it is not always possible, by laying out off of both feet you establish a measure of safety by ensuring that you land with your chest towards the ground rather than topsy-turvey.

4 Recover safely. Often two players will layout simultaneously and land together. If your body becomes intertwined with an opponents, instead of sprinting to get up, take enough time to ensure that you do not injure the opponent by doing so."

Random Video - Belgium U20 vs. USA U20 @ WJUC

Check out this cool video of the belgian Under20 open team at the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Heillbron, Germany a little while ago.
Might I just add that this was the very first game for both teams so that might explain while some things didn't work out (yet) like they were supposed to..... (at least that's what I've been told by some of these players).
More important than that of course are the great plays, cuts, passes, catches and D's being done in this film. For example at 1:20 , Lode getting horizontal like he should (damn boyyyyy !)
Strictly niceness !
Go Belgium !

Belgian Under17 Open Team Wins Spirit @ EJUC

The Belgian Under17 Open team took home the Spirit of the Game award at the European Junior Ultimate Championships in Heillbron, Germany.
No, I didn't make a mistake : in the under17 divisions this was a European Championship and not a Worlds !
Congratulations to the boys !
Picture by Guido DM from Freezzzbeezzz who couldn't resist this championship and went down there to support the belgian teams (including his son PJ) as a tourist :)

WJUC - Belgian Results After Round 1

The first round is completely over and now all the junior teams need to do is play there final placing games on saturday.
Here are the results for all three belgian teams :
Our Under17 open boys seem to have gotten the highest belgian ranking in this championship. They played the semi final against a seemingly very strong Great Britain, which they lost to with 15-5 and tomorrow they have to play against Sweden for the 3d/4th place out of 7. The belgian youngsters were already beaten by Sweden in pool play but this can only mean they will be more motivated to seek (and find) revenge ! Let's go !
The Under20 boys had 4 wins and 4 losses but still gave the top teams a big battle.
Coming home with 4 nice victories over Ireland,Israel,Japan(!) and Finland we can be very proud of our youngsters for their nice achievement.
They will be playing for 11th/12th place out of 18 also against Sweden on saturday.
Rock on dudes !

The belgian girls seem to have had a very hard time with some really hard competition. No names like Ireland,France,Netherlands or any other country who might be a little bit more in our league but only 'exotic' sounding names with maybe much more experience in their pool... I would like to give you some more info on their parcours and how they have done but that will be when they get back. For now let's keep our fingers crossed for their placing game against Austria for the 13th/14th place out of 14. Let's go girls !!

"The Greatest" at WJUC in Heillbron, Germany ! Nice !

Check out this "greatest" by Ethan Kovacs of the Canadian Junior U20 Open team (final catch by #15 Robert Schmidt) against Colombia.
If you ever wondered why this is called 'the greatest', it's just because this is about the greatest move you can ever do on a frisbee field. I actually had another one to show you but I've lost it. Does anybody remember where you can find one of those highlight videos with somebody scoring a massive greatest between 3 other defenders who already fell down on the floor somewhere in the right deep corner of the endzone in some USA or UPA or college championship ?

Tourney Preview - World Junior Ultimate Championships

These are the teams competing at the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Heillbron, Germany from monday 02/08 until saturday 07/08.
After the Worlds in Prague with Mooncatchers and XLR8RS, and the World U23 Champs in Firenze with the belgian mixed team bringing home the silver medal; Belgium has the honour to be represented by 3 different teams as you can see, which is also quite a prestation for a small country as ours.
Hope they will have a very good time, play some nice games and learn a lot of new things and maybe do a stunt here or there.
The belgian future is at our doorstep ! Better be ready !

If you wanna see the schedule check out http://schedule.wjuc2010.de/index.php?option=com_joomleague&func=showResultsRank&p=3&Itemid=53
